| General Description: | Greensboro Youth Soccer (GYS) administers soccer programs involving over 3,000 area young people ages 3 to19, some 400+ coaches and assistant coaches, and numerous team managers generously volunteering their time to advance the cause of youth soccer in our community. In 1973, Barbara Blum , soccermom and leader extraordinaire, and a group of soccer parents felt the need for an organized soccer program for the youth of Greensboro. That first year there were 22 teams, involving about 350 players. During the next few years there was an explosion of growth and popularity for the sport of soccer in Greensboro, as well as nationally. By 1977, enrollment had jumped to 1,200 players and in 1978 over 1,600 young people were participating on local soccer teams. At that time the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department dropped their sponsorship for a fall youth soccer season, leaving a void and providing the impetus for the formation of the Greensboro Youth Soccer Association (GYSA), a 501(c)3 non-profit entity to create a foundation and continuity for an active community youth soccer program. As the active membership of GYSA grew, it became apparent that a field complex of at least 10 fields, a concession stand, and restroom facilities would be needed to meet the growth and needs of the organization. With this in mind, GYSA began to sponsor and support annual fundraising events. The first annual May soccer tournament was held in 1980 and netted a loss, but the second annual May event saw 144 teams from 17 states participate, netting our first profit of about $7500. In 1983, Joseph M. Bryan, Sr. made a tremendous gift for the expansion of the Bryan Park Complex. The City of Greensboro was willing to lease the land for our soccer fields if GYSA paid for the development of the land. On March 27, 1984, an agreement between the City of Greensboro and GYSA was drafted. Shortly thereafter, construction was started on what is now the Bryan Park Soccer Complex. With the large amount of money needed to finish the initial project, GYSA increased its fundraising efforts. Many individuals and corporations stepped up with significant donatations. Those giving enough to pay for the development of one complete field were honored by having the field named for them. There were 11 fields built during that initial phase. We are indebted to all the volunteers, sponsors and individuals throughout our rich history, and their passion for our youth, our community and the for great game of soccer. |
