| General Description: | History of Oakwood Sports Centers In the fall of 1980, the Oakwood Farms Racquet Club entered the world of indoor soccer. It became one of only 5 indoor soccer facilities in the USA. Soon, the Hartford Hellions of the Major Indoor Soccer League, took on Oakwood as their practice facility. Rick Derella was lured away from graduate school to develop the facility into a full-scale Soccer Center with leagues and programs for adults and youth players. At that time Oakwood had one soccer field and five tennis courts. In 1982 the Hartford Hellions were sold and moved to Memphis but Derella and the soccer field stayed behind. As the tennis business waned in the early 80's, Derella and David Farrell, former college teammates, convinced the owners to convert to two soccer fields in 1985. As soccer continued to grow in the early 90's, Oakwood added a third field, and eliminated tennis altogether. In 1992, the Oakwood Sports Center of Hamden was born with the lease and conversion of a building originally designed for hockey. The Hamden facility now housed three indoor fields and 53,000 square feet. In 2001, after working together for 20 years, Derella and Farrell purchased Oakwood-Glastonbury and completed field #4 as a teaching area for youngsters. Oakwood-Glastonbury now boasts 66,000 square feet, giving Oakwood Hamden & Glastonbury over 100,000 square feet of soccer with seven fields to play on. Today the Oakwood Sports Center is recognized as a leader and innovator of the indoor soccer industry that now has over 300 indoor facilities nationwide. History of Select Soccer Academy In 1980, Rick Derella, Dave Farrell and Tom Mulroy were young soccer coaches with a wealth of soccer camp experience. That experience was gathered from camp coaching across the USA in the mid to late 1970's. Once in Connecticut, they developed a teaching program of "Year Round Training" with summer soccer camps and winter indoor soccer clinics at Oakwood. The summer camps started with a little over 100 campers two decades ago and have blossomed to over 1,300 campers each summer. The Academy teaching style has always used its coach's dynamic personalities to motivate its students. The organization offers programs for all levels of play, from Pre-School through High School Premier players. |
