Otago United is pleased to announce that Terry Phelan is to be the Otago United Player/Coach for the next 2 seasons. Terry undoubtedly is the highest profile player to ever grace the New Zealand Football competition. The Otago United Concept In many regions around the country, soccer has been presented with a unique opportunity. For the first time in many years soccer has had the opportunity to compete at a national level, using a regional team as the basis for the entry. This is a significant departure from the club model that has been the driving force behind new Zealand soccer in years gone by. Otago united incorporated is a society that has been set up specifically to compete in the new national soccer league that will commence in October 2004. The society has been formed with the blessing of all clubs in the greater Dunedin area, and the regional associations from timaru south. In all 21 clubs and four associations are members of Otago United Inc, becoming the biggest amalgamation of footballing power in the region’s history. Not only do we have the opportunity to participate in the national league, we also have a unique opportunity to grow soccer in this part of the world. This concept will incorporate a mixture of the tried and true, plus some new ideas and concepts that will ensure Otago United remains at the forefront of football in New Zealand. There are many challenges to be over come. We must have a successful team. We must ensure that we are financially and operationally viable. Our youth will be the source of our strength. Our ambition is long term and it is critical that in the first year we establish the platforms to achieve these aims In the sections following we outline a number of the key aspects of Otago United. Our people The strength of any organisation is in its people. The members of the society and the directors have sought to bring together a group of people who have the skill, the passion and the dedication to achieve the success sought and to guide the club in achieving its aims. |
