The former Bishops´ School No 8 was retreaded as a lock to terrific effect in 1998 to make ´Boomer´ one of the most mobile locks in world rugby.


His fine performances in the 1999 Super 12 catapulted him into the Springbok set-up but he was tragically denied a trip to the World Cup when he damaged a thumb in the penultimate warm-up match.



'Boomer' is an all-rounder ho can play on the side of the scrum as well as in the second row. He was vice-captain of the Stormers in 2000 before deciding to further his playing and professional horizons with a stint in French rugby with Montferrand in 2001/2.

He made a return to Bok rugby with his inclusion in the 2003 World Cup squad



In the 2003 and 2004 Vodacom Super 12 competitions he was called on to lead the Investec Stormers in the absence of Corne Krige.
